While nearly everyone in the workshop was crowded around the computer reading the email from Santa Claus (Read yesterday's North Pole Times for the story--Elvin), Gizmo Elf, Santa's Chief Inventing elf, was staring at the Appendapulator, the toymaking machine that accidentally popped Santa all the way to Cucamonga. "Well, paint me red and call me a cherry! I think I know what happened!"
Waldo Elf rummaged through his pockets. "I don't have any red paint, Gizmo," he said. "I could color you purple with this crayon and call you a grape, though."
"It was a figure of speech, Waldo," said Gizmo. "I think I crosswired the flanged prestidigimuggin. I'm going to crawl inside and see if I can fix it."
Gizmo disappeared inside the great machine. There was a clank, a clonk, two pongs, a ping, and a THUNK. "I think that may have done it.," said Gizmo from inside the machine. "Waldo, twist the pronged particulator one-half turn counter-clockwise, and pull the switch."
Waldo turned the pronged particulator as instructed. "Gizmo, do you think it's a good idea to try this while you're inside the machine?" asked Jiller Elf.
"I have to make sure the forple is arrayed properly. Go ahead, Waldo!"
Waldo pulled the switch. The lights on the machine flashed briefly, and there was a loud pop. Something had appeared next to the Appendapulator!
But instead of Santa, there was a large box, wrapped in green and red paper, with a big gold bow on top. Jiller Elf leaned toward the Appendapulator. "Gizmo," she called out, "Santa didn't appear, but there is a big present out here!"
Gizmo didn't respond. Instead, the box rocked back and forth. "Okay," the box said, "I was wrong. It wasn't the flanged prestidigimuggin. Someone unwrap me, and let me try something else."
Will Gizmo ever figure out what went wrong with the Appendapulator? Or should they just give up now and put him under a Christmas tree somewhere? Keep reading the North Pole Times to find out!
