On one end of the Appendapulator, everything was 'business as usual;' brightly wrapped presents were popping out ot the machine as fast as the elves could carry them away. At the other end, though, things were a little different. Gizmo Elf, inventor of the Appendapulator, was standing knee-deep in a pile of sprockets, springs, sprongs, and assorted gadgets. He'd pick one up, turn it over in his hands, poke it, prod it, shake it--do everything but taste it. Sometimes he would attatch it to the Appendapulator. Most times he would just put it back down on the pile.
"I think I'm forgetting something, Waldo," he said to his assistant.
Waldo nodded. "I know how that is. I think I forget things too. I thought I forgot something this morning, as a matter of fact."
"What did you do about it?" asked Gizmo.
"I went back home and put my pants on," said Waldo. "Usually that's what I forget."
Gizmo smiled. "I wish it was that simple for me."
"Sorry," said Waldo, "but I only have the one pair of pants--and they're waaay too small for you."
Gizmo looked over at the door of the workshop. "Any minute now, Mrs. Claus is going to come through that door and ask me how it's going," he said. "I hate to have to tell her I'm no further along in finding a way to bring Santa back to the North Pole than yesterday."
The door to the workshop opened, and sure enough, in walked Mrs. Claus, who went straight to where Gizmo and Waldo were standing. "How's it going, Gizmo?" she asked.
Waldo stared at Mrs. Claus, then at Gizmo. "Wow," he said admiringly," It's like you have cable!"
"What?" asked Gizmo.
"Cable--you know, ESPN or something!" said Waldo.
"You mean ESP."
"I don't know--I don't watch TV."
Mrs. Claus handed Gizmo a covered dish. "I baked you a chicken pot pie with extra carrots."
"Ooh! Extra carrots!" said Waldo. "Can I have some?"
Gizmo took the dish gratefully. "Thank you. I wish I could give you some good news, but it's going kind of slow right now."
"A perfect time to stop and have some chicken pot pie, then," said Waldo.
"I know you're doing your best, Gizmo,": said Mrs. Claus kindly. "You'll find a way to get him back."
"And maybe he can have some chicken pot pie, too! ...Aren't we going to eat now?" asked Waldo, looking from Mrs. Claus, to Gizmo, to the plate--none of which seemed to be paying any attention to him.
"But will I find a way to get him back in time for Christmas?" asked Gizmo. Right now, I can't even get the machine to do anything..."
Just then the covered dish disappeared with a pop! Almost instantly there was another pop next to the Appendapulator. Gizmo and Mrs. Claus looked over to see Waldo, with one hand holding a chicken pot pie with extra carrots, and the other hand on the lever of the Appendapulator.
"Waldo!" cried Mrs Claus and Gizmo at the same time.
Waldo hung his head. "I'm sorry," he said, "but I just wanted to have some chicken pot pie."
How did Waldo get the Appendapulator to work? Can HE get Santa back? And will he share the chicken pot pie? Keep reading the North Pole Times to find out!
