Reindeer Skate on for Second Day

Grace at its Finest

[Reindeer Skate on for Second Day]

Today, the reindeer head back to the ice for the second day of the Figure Skating competition.

Figure Skating is a three-day event with each reindeer skating in a different way every day. The Official Elves judge each day, and then we add up the scores to see who the winner is.

“Oh my that’s difficult for the judges,” said Rudolph. “They have a hard job here. Surely, they will try to grade each reindeer fairly and as best they can.”

Today, the reindeer will try the short program. The short program is a series of moves on the ice – four of them – and each deer will perform the same four moves.

This year, the moves are the Rolling Donut, the Whacker-Smacker, the Whirling Whoosher and the Wild Willy-Nilly Flip Flop.

“Oh for heaven’s sake, that sounds like fun,” said Rudolph, “I’d like to be out there for this one.”

As we know, Rudolph is not allowed to play in any reindeer games, but he will be along-side the ice with our friends Dick Elf and Peggy Elf to provide expert commentary for the next two days of skating.

“Skating is the most wonderful sport in the world,” said Dick Elf. “Any young folks who have the chance to skate should try it. It’s good exercise and lots of fun.”

Indeed, and with those good words, let’s head out to the Hoojamawazit Skating and Ice Cream Palace for the action!

First up is Dancer. Dancer is looking good on the skates, and as the music begins, she starts her program. First it’s the Rolling Donut.

“Oh, Dancer handles that well,” said Rudolph. “A very nice Rolling Donut.”

And then the Whacker-Smacker and Whirling Whoosher. Dancer completes those moves very well too.

“Oh, the leg position is tad low there,” said Dick Elf, “Otherwise, very good by Dancer.”

“I think Dancer is doing very well, so far,” said Peggy Elf.

And then it’s the finale with the Willy-Nilly Flip Flop.

“Oh, a fantastic Flop,” said Rudolph. “Very good job by Dancer!”

Yes, indeed it is. And the Official Elves are tallying the their scores. Each of the three judges gives his own score, and for Dancer, it’s 9.6, 9.5 and 9.7. Very nice.

Next up it’s Comet. Comet’s on the ice and she’s moving well. It’s a good Donut, a nice Whacker-Smacker and then a solid Whirling Whoosher, and she’s heading into the last move.

“She’s looking great,” said Rudolph.

And yes, it’s a beautiful Willy-Nilly Flip Flop to close the program for Comet. Very nice effort. The scores? She earns a 9.7, 9.7 and 9.6. Very good job.

Blitzen, Donder, Prancer, Cupid, Dasher and Vixen all follow with good efforts, and that’s it for the short program.

Check back tomorrow for the final day of the Figure Skating event to see who wins the fifth gold medal of the games.
