St. Patrick’s Day at the North Pole

Let's take a peek at how we celebrate March

[St. Patrick’s Day at the North Pole]

The residents at the North Pole anxiously await the arrival of spring, because they get to see the sun! Right now our favorite elves are decorating for St. Patrick’s Day at the North Pole while also starting their spring cleaning and planting. They are dreaming about shamrocks and the sun! Let's take a peek at how our Christmas friend's celebrate in March.

St. Patrick's Day:

The elves love to cheer on their distant cousins the leprechauns during their holiday, St. Patrick's Day! St Patrick is known as the Apostle of Ireland. Legend says he banished all of the snakes from the Isle! Since Ireland is home to the leprechauns, they love to celebrate this holiday!

These mischief makers are the reason it is said that one must wear green on St. Patrick’s Day. Leprechauns love to run around pinching people. But GREEN makes a person invisible to the leprechauns. But the elves are very concerned that their cousins are now considered endangered! In 2009, they were granted protection under the European Habitats Directive by the town of Carlingford, Ireland. They estimated that only 236 leprechauns remained in Ireland. Many children set leprechaun traps around St. Patrick's Day, and who can blame them. Legend claims that if you catch a leprechaun they have to grant you three wishes. But in the North Pole, the elves know that to trap an endangered species is too risky. Especially since they know what it is like to be a much sought after mythical creature.

Spring is here!

For those that live in the Northern Hemisphere, including our friends at the North Pole, the spring equinox is March 20th in 2021. In the North Pole the sun finally rises on the spring equinox! The North Pole winters stay dark, which is helpful around December when Santa makes his long trip. But by March the elves are ready to welcome the sun. The sun rises higher in the sky each day until the summer solstice. And it stays out all day and night. That is what the elves refer to as the season of the Midnight Sun! This sun does help them get a lot of their toy making done early in the year, so by the time the sun sets in the fall, they can start to slow down and focus on deliveries and the naughty and nice list!

Elves in Spring:

Our elves like to celebrate spring by making maple syrup! You see, syrup is one of the elves' favorite treats. So you can find a few of our elves traveling down to North America in the spring to try their hand at collecting sap from maple trees and boiling it down to syrup. Maple syrup is the perfect way to celebrate the winter thaw! They make enough bottles to last all year long.
