SMASH! CRASH! BASH!
Mrs. Claus and the elves raced toward Gizmo’s workshop as fast as their boots would carry them.
“Oh dear,” Mrs. Claus called out over the noise. “I hope they’re not doing too much damage to the rocket!”
BASH! SMASH! CRASH!
“Maybe it’s not as bad as it sounds,” Gizmo Elf said, though his voice lacked confidence.
The echoes thundered across the North Pole. Inside the workshop stood the rescue rocket—built by Gizmo himself using the Appendapulator, the remarkable machine he had carefully reworked from toy-making to rocket-building. It had been ready to launch on its mission to bring Santa home from orbit.
Then—
CRASH! SMASH! WRAP!
The elves skidded to a halt.
“Wrap?” Jiller Elf asked. “What kind of sound is that?”
They rushed into the workshop—and froze.
“Holly snowflakes…” Toby Elf breathed. “Where did all these huge presents come from?”
The workshop was packed wall to wall with enormous packages, each one neatly wrapped in bright paper, tied with thick ribbons and bows. Every box had a tag attached.
Mrs. Claus picked one up and read aloud. “‘To Santa.’”
She looked around in disbelief. “Where did these presents come from? And where is the rocket?”
Just then, a loud rrrip echoed through the room.

Gizmo was already tearing into one of the packages.
“Hey!” Toby shouted. “You can’t unwrap that—it’s a present for Santa!”
“No, it isn’t,” Gizmo said, peering inside. “At least… not anymore. This was the rocket.”
The elves gasped.
“The Yeti must have thought it was a gift,” Gizmo explained. “They took the rocket apart—and wrapped it up for Santa.”
“Can you put it back together?” Jiller asked anxiously.
Gizmo hesitated, then nodded. “Yes. But it will take six days.”
Mrs. Claus’ face fell. “That’s the day after Christmas.”
“I’m sorry,” Gizmo said quietly. “That’s the fastest I can manage.”
Mrs. Claus took a long breath, then gently wiped a tear from her eye.
“Then we have no choice,” she said softly. “We’ll have to cancel Christmas this year.”
